East Oakland Monuments (2018)
These monuments once emerged from moments of crisis as acts of protection for the city. Although each carried a different mission, they ultimately failed, lost their influence, and were abandoned. This project asks what would happen if these monuments were given a second life—not as preserved heritage, but as active civic infrastructure. By replicating each monument across the city, every replica is assigned a distinct economic function. Together, they generate financial resources that enable the city to rebuild itself, transforming monuments from symbols of failed protection into an operating system capable of sustaining the city’s future.
Conceptual Narrative
The project begins by tracing public funding allocated to the district over the past twenty years, analyzing its trajectories and its influence on shaping the urban fabric. By transforming buildings into visual symbols, the project maps the movement of public funding across the city, illustrating how investment has flowed from one building to another. In doing so, it seeks to make the flow of public funding visible and transparent, enabling a clearer understanding of past investment priorities while proposing a new fifteen-year development strategy.
